Chinanews, Zhengzhou, September 11 – According to Han Mengjie, assistant director of the Office of AIDS Prevention and Control of the State Council of China, AIDS epidemic1 in the country is spreading from high-risk groups to ordinary residents.
Statistics show that more than 50% of drug addicts2 who take narcotics3 by injection in Xinjiang, Yunnan and Sichuan are infected with the disease. In the first 6 months of 2007 alone, 18,543 new HIV carriers and 4,314 new AIDS patients were reported, of whom 2,039 are dead by now. By the end of last July, 214,300 AIDS-infected persons had been reported in China, including 56,758 patients, of whom 18,246 had been dead. Sharing injectors among drug addicts has become one of the major ways of AIDS contagion4. 50.8% of drug addicts have shared injectors with fellow drug abusers. By the way, 11% of them have had unprotected sex. Nearly 63% of prostitutes in China don’t take any protective measures when having sex, which will also help the spread of AIDS and other venereal diseases. Large shifting population also makes it harder for China to put the disease under control.
