Chinanews, Beijing, September 11 – CNNIC has conducted the first survey among netizens in rural China, finding that before last June, there were at least 37.4 million netizens in rural areas, 62% of them being male, while the proportion in urban China is 52.7%.
17.5 million netizens in rural China are juveniles1, while in 2006, the figure was only 6.75 million. The survey shows that 84% of netizens in rural areas are under 30 years old, while only 66% of urban netizens are of the same age. Nearly 85% of rural netizens have not completed senior high school, and most of them enjoy the Internet as a major entertainment. Only very few of them surf the Internet for news, searching for information or using other services like online banking2.
