Chinanews, Wuhan, Sept 11 – In order to protect the water resources and the ecological1 environment near the Three Gorges2 Dam area, China should further relocate 200,000 people from the Three Gorges Dam area in addition to the present 1.2 million people that have already moved away, said Liang Fuqing, head of the Three Gorges Relocation Project Center under the State Council in Wuhan on Monday.
The Three Gorges Dam is mostly built in barren mountainous areas. Apart from those that were relocated from the Three Gorges Dam area, there are still one million people who now live in places with serious soil erosion problem and poor ecological environment. According to the basic relocation principle, all people that live in areas located above the water immersion3 line and below the first watershed4 line should be relocated, Liang said. Based on this principle, it is estimated that about 200,000 people should be relocated from the Three Gorges Dam area. Of them, 150,000 live in the dam area near Chongqing and 50,000 live in the dam area near Hubei. The total relocation cost might reach 4 billion yuan.
