Chinanews, Wuhan, September 12 – “China is a developing country with a very large population. Today its top task has shifted from feeding its people to providing more jobs to them,” said Qin Youguo, the former director of the School of Architecture of the Tsinghua University, in Wuhan on September 9, 2007.
That day, Qin made a speech at annual forum1 of the China Science and Technology Association held in Wuhan, titled “On Urbanization in China”. In the past, most people were wondering how would China feed such a large population with so limited farmland, but today China has achieved the miracle with the hard work of all its people. At present, agricultural alone can’t provide enough job opportunities to the 800-million rural population, while the first problem the government must solve during the urbanization process will also be employment. After the people have acquired ample food and clothing, they will sure start to pursue a well-off life, and only through industrialization and urbanization will their dream come true. Thus it is natural for farmland problem to change into the employment problem. Besides, during urbanization, the government must balance the benefit received by urban and rural population.
