Chinanews, Chongqing, Sept 13 – Chinese police recently announced some of the drug cases uncovered in 2007. In one big case, drug dealer1 Li Xianhuan, who had avoided police investigation2 for three years, used the illegal money to produce TV series at the Hengdian World Studios. In recent years, much money had flowed into the entertainment circle in some abnormal ways. An insider said on Tuesday that in many cases, the criminals attempted to launder3 their drug profit by investing in film-making, the Chongqing Evening News reported.
On January 6, 2007, police destroyed a drug making plant at a rented house in Hengdian County, Zhejiang Province. Police arrested the owner of the drug plant Li Xianhuan and confiscated4 more than 100 kilograms of ice drugs on the site, according to reports from CCTV. It is said that Li had escaped from police for three years. In November last year, a TV series with his investment was started to be made at the Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang. At the shooting ceremony, Li even took the drug maker5 to attend the ceremony. Police found that by investing in TV series, Li could realize three goals: first, he could make ice drugs secretly under the legal excuse of making films; second, his investment in films could actually bring in more money for him; third, he could launder his illegal money through investment in films. However, Li was not the first person to try to launder their illegal money in this way. In January 2005, the Nanjing-based Weekend newspaper reported a case in which a criminal named Shi Xue invested 50 million yuan in the production of a TV series called Da Han Tian Zi(Son of Heaven of the Great Han). The money he invested in the film might also be obtained through illegal means. In April 2006, an official, Lu Hongshi, from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television was quoted by the Beijing Legal Times as saying that in recent years, over one hundred films and TV series had failed to pass authority check every year. The main reason might be that some people made these films roughly for the solo purpose of laundering6 their illegal money. Lu said the fund for many films came from very strange channels. He thought that the money came by illegal means.
