Chinanews, Kunming, September 20 – Recently, several black bears, which are under second-class protection in China, hurt people in Sanhe Village of Lijiang, Yunnan Province, one of the most poverty-stricken villages in China. Local villagers demand that local government take measures, to capture1 the bears as soon as possible.
“Though bears have ruined our fields and killed our lambs, we have never complained about that. This time, they have harmed our neighbours. How are we supposed to tolerate2 it?” said a villager. There are 160 people of 39 families living in the village. Stray3 black bears have hurt two people in the last two weeks. Most of local families earn less than 3,000 yuan a year via raising sheep and growing beans, but none of them have hunted wild animals or cut trees in the forest for money. “I don’t understand! We will be punished if we harm a protected animal. How can those bears be still at large after they harmed people and our property?” asked another villager.
