Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 21 – Recently, a Chinese doctor well known for his devoted1 efforts to help web-addicted2 kids to get rid of their problems has published his most recent research findings about the mental status of web-addicted kids. The report revealed some common features of web-addicted kids. It reached the conclusion after it investigated 641 children who suffered from some type of mental problems.
A child's family, education and social background are all important factors that might cause a child to addict3 to web, with family being the most important factor, said Tao Ran, the author of the report who is head of the China Youth Development Center at the General Hospital of Beijing Military Area Command. According to Tao, 46% of the kids covered in his report had met some tragic4 events in life when they were still very young. “They can even clearly recall the place, time and people involved when the tragic event occurred. The tragic events have cast a shadow on their mind. They have no sense of security and they don't trust anybody any more, and their relations with other people are fragile,” Tao said. “Parents do not acknowledge the good points of their children, they scold their children or spoil their children too much. As a result, children constantly feel that they are ineffectual and they lack self-dignity. Their mind is full of anger and resentment5. They are hostile to others,” Tao noted6. The report shows that 94.5% of the web-addicted children are hostile to their parents. 52.3% of the children addicted to web say their parents do not care about them and don't understand them. According to a report from the China Youth Daily, half of the children addicted to web are raised in affluent7 families. Among the 641 children this report investigated, 50% are raised in a family with a family income of 1,000-3,000 yuan; 25.5% are raised in a family with a family income of 1,000-2,000 yuan; and 24.5% are raised in a family with a family income of 2,000-3,000 yuan. For 62.5% of the web-addicted children covered by the report, their parents have bought commercial houses. “The parents in these families are able to provide a comfortable life for their children. However, children brought up in these families are also the most vulnerable group to psychological problems,” said Tao. The report shows that of all the web-addicted children covered by the report, 79% are the only child in the family.
