Chinanews, Guangzhou, Oct 11 – Last month, the Shanghai Sperm1 Bank issued a notice which said that due to the lack of high-quality sperms2, the sperms bank would no longer accept any arrangements for test-tube baby surgeries before 2009. When the notice was publicized, the allegation that “Chinese men are impotent” spread far and wide in society again.
However, Shanghai Sperm Banks is not the only bank that faces the sperms shortage problem. Information shows that in 2006, about 1,600 couples in Guangdong asked for help from local sperm bank. However, only 300 of them were able to get sperms. At present, most sperms donors3 in Guangzhou are college students. The sperm banks can not get enough sperms either because there aren't enough donors or the quality of sperms from donors is not good enough, according to an investigation4 published by Guangzhou Daily. From 1981 to 1996, the quality of sperms of Chinese men declined by 1 percentage point every year. The sperm activity rate and the rate of sperm with normal morphology both declined by 10.4% and 8.4%, respectively, according to information released by the State Family Planning Commission. In Shanghai, about one thousand couples are bothered by the husband’s lack of sperms problem. With the help of the Shanghai Sperm Bank, some wives are lucky enough to become pregnant. Compared with these lucky women, many more couples are still waiting to get appropriate sperms. However, because of the sperms shortage, they might not be able to have baby until 2009, or even after that. At present, there are at least 100,000 couples in Shanghai who need to get medical treatment because of their infertility5 problem. In most of these cases, the infertility problem is caused by the husband side. In Shanghai, about 5,000 couples need to receive artificial insemination surgeries every year. However, the Shanghai Sperm Bank is able to do such surgeries to only 2,000 of them. The sperm banks in other Chinese cities also face the same problem. Information shows that in Guangxi, there were only 100 people who donated their sperms to local sperm bank between 2000 and 2003. In 2006, the sperm bank in Guangdong also met the sperms shortage problem.
