Chinanews, Kunming, Oct 12 – Jiubao is a small village in Changtang Town. It is located 32 kilometers away from Yunnan's Xuanwei City. Jiubao Village is quite a special village – it is the home of a Chinese farmer whose total assets1 now reach nearly one billion yuan.
The farmer is Xia Yaozhou, a 44-year-old man who is the general manager of a coal mine company called Qinjiadi. Xia quitted further study after he had finished junior high school. He then made a living as an artisan. He had even worked for many years in coal pits after he got married. But now, he had his own coal mine. With the money he earned, he set about building houses for villagers because he wants to turn the small village into a city. He has invested money in order to set up some companies that can form a complete chain of meat processing. It is his hope that one day farmers will work in these companies and be no longer farmers. They will become city workers and some of them will even become shareholders2 of the company. Now his village has gardens, lakes, roads and even a large supermarket. He has invested 20 million yuan to build a line of European-style villas4 in his village. The project will consist of 120 sets of apartments, each covering an area of 265 square meters. His project will be finished by the middle of next year and by then, about 141 households in his village will be able to live in these villas free of charge. If one passes the village's supermarket and walks ahead, one will notice that a pig farm has sprung up on a large flat land. The pig farm is built by Xia, too, with an investment of 5 million yuan. Every villager in Jiubao Village is the farm's shareholder3. About 20 villagers work in the pig farm every day and they receive salaries by the end of every month. Xia hires all these workers. He hopes that with his efforts, all the villagers in his hometown will no longer need to do any farm work. Instead, they can live as comfortably as city dwellers5, too – they will not only live in villas, they will also have their own gardens, fountains, meeting halls, fitness6 centers, etc. (They might also hire some security guards in front of these buildings, too, like what city dwellers do.) He plans to invest about 10 million yuan in future to build a hi-tech plantation7 and a cattle farm. “In many developed countries, all the people in that country can enjoy a prosperous life generally. Why can't this be true in China's Changtang Town?! I don't mind what other people will think of me. All I want to do is to see that the villagers in my hometown can all enjoy a good life,” he said.
