Chinanews, Guangzhou, October 18 – Himono is the Japanese word for dried fish, and himono women are the young women who are reluctant to do anything except sleeping or watching video tapes. The word was first used in a comic book Hotaru No Hikari (the light of fireflies) to describe Hotaru Amemiya, the heroine.

A typical himono woman is particularly desperate for love affair, and her motto is “take it easy”.

Many young office ladies are leading such a life right now. Every weekend, they would rather stay in their apartments sleeping, listening to music or watching movies instead of going shopping or doing sports with friends.

“My work is really boring and exhausting, thus I only want to rest in my little private niche1 on weekends. By the way if it is fun staying at home, why bother going out with others?” said Xiaozhen, a secretary of a state-owned enterprise2.

However, psychologists take the lifestyle of himono women as a way to relieve pressures.

“If a himono woman only takes this status as a way of relaxing herself, then it is absolutely normal, for everyone needs a shelter from the hustle3 and bustle4 of urban life. However, if she follows that lifestyle everyday and refuses to communicate with others, then it might be the signs of autism and needs treatment, ” said an expert.
