Chinanwes, Beijing, October 25 – Despite the fact that the first Employment Promotion1 Law in China will become effective on January 1, 2008, saying that employers should not discriminate2 against women, women today still find it is harder for them to find jobs than before.
Quite a large number of companies believe female employees will cause loss to them when they are about to have babies, and they take this as their excuses for discrimination against women. However, procreation is one of the basic rights of the people and no individual or organizations can deprive them of that right. Actually, recruitment ads of many companies say that they want only male employees. Shanghai Municipal Women’s Federation3 conducted a survey, finding that 55.8% of college girls believe they are faced with sexual discrimination. 63.7% of girls and 47.6% of boys admit that they have witnessed severe discriminations against females.
