Chinanews, Chongqing, Nov. 8 – Last week, a strange job recruitment poster appeared in a college campus in Shapingba District, Chongqing. The poster says women who are “1.60 meters tall can get a minimum salary of 1,000 yuan a month, those who are 1.65 meters tall will be paid a minimum salary of 1,500 yuan a month, and those who are 1.70 meters tall can get at least 2,000 yuan a month…”

The job recruitment poster aroused indignation from some students. Many girl students decided1 that they wouldn't apply for the job, the Chongqing Evening News reported.

The company that put up the poster, Deyun Trading Company, Ltd., claimed that they were trying to recruit some female college students who would graduate next year as English majors to work for them. In its job recruitment poster, the company only says that the candidates should have good looks and an elegant manner. Apart from the height requirements and the salary offers, the company has not listed its requirements for students' English capability2 or their computer skills. Instead, it dwells a lot on the company's business and its promising3 future in the poster.

Deyun Trading Company, Ltd. is a company mainly engaged in the export of plastic profiles and gardening machines. In making the job offer, the company only wants to recruit some office clerks. It has posted its job recruitment in many colleges that will have female graduates majoring in English, the company manager told this reporter.

Then, why does the company offer salary based on one's height? The manager explained that once recruited, the office clerks would participate in many negotiations4 with foreigners. From their past experience, they found that a woman's manners and self-confidence had a lot to do with her height. So they decided to link her salary with her height.

When asked why they mentioned nothing about candidates' professional skills in the job offer, the manager said there was no need for them to do so, “I believe that as college graduates their professional skills will be good enough.”

However, some female college students found the poster unacceptable.

“Does this poster mean that one's looks and height can supersede5 anything, even one's talents and skills?” asked Feng Qiao, who is now a senior student at the English Department of Chongqing Normal University.

Many girl students said they felt very uncomfortable with the ad. It made them question the motives6 of the company in making such a job offer. They didn’t believe that they would have a happy life and a promising future working in such a company.
