Chinanews, Beijing, November 15 – How many stray pet dogs and cats are there in Beijing? According to the estimation of some NGOs, there were at least 245 thousand stray pets in residential1 communities by the end of 2006, and the total number might reach 400 thousand, as many of them live in parks or university campuses.

“There were 5 or 6 stray cats in our community last year, and the figure might have exceeded 20 by now. Two of the female cats are pregnant again,” said an old lady living in Xiheyan Community.

“Cats have an amazing ability in reproduction. If left unattended, a pair of stray cats can produce hundreds of thousands of kittens or even a million within 7 or 8 years,” said Zhang Luping, the director of the Beijing Human and Animal Environmental Protection Center. Nowadays, the population of stray pet animals in Beijing is increasing in an uncontrollable way.

The increasing number of stray animals has also made some people torture these animals. At present, there are 200-odd cats and 500-plus dogs at the Human and Animal Environmental Protection Center, most being brutally2 tortured stray pets.
