China receives foreign fund for AIDS prevention

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 17 – Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced in Beijing on Thursday that it would donate 50 million US dollars for Chinese government and non-governmental bodies to fight against AIDS. On the same day, the Ministry¹ of Health, the State Council Working Committee on AIDS Prevention and Control, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation jointly² kicked off a campaign to fight against AIDS in China.

In recent years, China has taken active measures to combat AIDS. The central government has increased its funds to fight against AIDS year on year. As the work has now moved into a strategic point, it will be very helpful for China to receive funds and technological³ support in the fight against AIDS from international organizations at this time, said Huang Jiefu, vice⁴ minister of health.

In recent years, China has seen a fast increase of AIDS transmission among humans via sexual behaviors, especially among MSM (men who have sex with men) group. For MSM group, their infection rate has reached 2.5%-6.5%. Highly risky⁵ sexual behaviors have become the main transmission form of AIDS virus, said Hao Yang, deputy director of the Ministry of Health Disease Prevention and Control Office.

The fund project by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be used to prevent AIDS among the high-risky group in cities, including MSM group and drug addicts⁶ who take drugs through venoclysis. The program will last for five years and will be undertaken in 14 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Nanjing. The fund project will be included as a part of Chinese AIDS prevention and control work.

Of the 50 million US dollars provided by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 20 million US dollars will be given to the Ministry of Health and the rest 30 million US dollars will be given to various local, national and international non-governmental organizations in the anti-AIDS field.
