Chinanews, Taiyuan, November 20 – Chen Juan, 37, who had a son by test-tube method or IVF, three years ago, as she wanted a child without getting married. Her story has been revealed by a media in Shanxi.
“I will try my best to give my son a happy life,” said Chen. However, a fine of 20,000 yuan was imposed1 on Chen when she had her son. “I have the right to be a mother, no matter I want to get married or not,” complained Chen. In fact, quite a large number of urban females in China share the viewpoint with Chen. In 2001, 18 Shanghai women became mothers without getting married, and the figure in 2002 was 43. Most of such females have a higher education background and enjoy a decent2 income plus high social positions. Besides, it seems that the general public is not ready to accept these unmarried mothers, even in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. “I believe it is an advancement3 of our society to allow single women to become mothers, as it is one’s right to choose one’s own lifestyle. If one wants to have a baby, it is unfair for one to get married in order to have it against one’s will, ” said Yang, a college teacher.
