Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 28 – “Nowadays, young people are very realistic about their marriage issue. Many of them place financial status as the most important criteria1 in choosing their marriage partners, while some are not very serious about their marriage issue.”
The statement was made by Mr. Su, a private entrepreneur2 in Wuhan, who does not agree with the marriage values held by some young people today. However, Mr. Su often told his daughter that when choosing a marriage partner, she should give much consideration about her future husband’s prospects3. “It will do her good (by thinking in this way). In today’s society, love will not last long without a good financial background,” he said. Recently, the China Youth Daily Social Investigation4 Center and the Information Center of Tencent website carried out an investigation to some 8,932 young people. The survey shows that about 67.9% of the young people think that compared with their parents generation, young people today do not focus much on love issue. Despite this, about 40% of the young people in the survey say they will look for their true love. In the survey, 85.5% of the young people think that people of their generation give first priority5 to their marriage partners’ financial conditions. However, there is still 59% of the young people who believe in love at first sight. When asked why young people today do not focus much on love issue, Ms. Xie, a lady working in a trade firm in Shenzhen, said it was all because “young people today focus more on money issue.” “In Shenzhen, there is a popular saying that when talking about marriage issue, the future husband should first consider buying a house while the future wife should consider buying a car first. However, how many men can afford to buy a house and how many women can afford to buy a car in Shenzhen today? Not many. If this is the prerequisite6 condition for a marriage, I suppose that few people could marry nowadays,” she said. However, when talking about her own marriage issue, Ms. Xie admitted that in choosing her future husband, she would focus much on his financial conditions. Without a good financial background, it would be difficult to sustain7 life after marriage, she said. In the survey, 85.5% of the young people think that people of their generation give first priority on their marriage partners' financial conditions. 48.9% of them even said directly that economic conditions “are the most important thing in love issue. Without money, love will easily fade.” This social phenomenon is regarded as normal, according to Hao Yuzhang, associate professor at the Sociology8 Department at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Professor Hao has now devoted9 much of his time to carrying out a study on sociology of family.
