Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 13 – The employment rate among Chinese youth is on the decline. Currently, China has thousands of young people who are not in education, employment or training, according to a report released by the Renmin University of China's Population Development Studies Center, the China Youth Daily reported.
The report shows that in China, employment rate among people above the age of 16 is 69.7%, down by 4.4 percentage points compared with related employment rate in 2000. On the whole, employment rate among the youth is on a declining trend. The report shows that among people between the ages of 16 and 29, the employment rate was 65.9% in 2005, which was 6 percentage points lower than that in 2000. Most notably1, the employment rate among women in this age group declined largely by 7 percentage points. Among people between the ages of 16 -35, the employment rate fell by 6 percentage points and the employment rate for women in this age group fell by 5.7 percentage points. Although the employment rate for both men and women had declined, the employment rate for women had declined by a larger margin2 than men. Sexual discrimination might be attributed to this phenomenon, said Hou Jiawei, a person in charge of the research program. Faced with this problem, women tend to study for a longer time in college. That explains why there are so many women who have obtained master's or doctor's degree. The report shows that among young people at the ages of 16 -29 and people at the ages of 16-35, the unemployment rates reach 3.62% and 3.20%, respectively. These people are called the NEET group (Not in Education, Employment or Training). In China, about 8.86 million people at the ages of 16-29 belong to this group and 12.16 million people at the ages of 16-35 are considered as NEET people.
