Ohio officer Chief Chad Dojack will remain on paid leave until the case is resolved, council officials have said.

Mr Dojack and a second police chief, Barry Carpenter, pleaded not guilty on Friday to several felony(重罪) charges.

Prosecutors2 alleged3 the men had conspired4(阴谋,协力) to take items from the woman's home to sell on to paparazzi(专门追逐名人偷拍照片的摄影者).

'Celebrity5 crazed'

Mr Carpenter, 32, who is a police chief in Martins Ferry, has been charged with two counts of burglary(盗窃行为), receiving stolen property, theft in office, unauthorised use of property or services and one count of tampering6(干涉的,干预的) with evidence.

Bridgeport Police Chief Mr Dojack, 30, was charged with two counts of complicity(串通,共谋) to burglary and one count of complicity to receiving stolen property.

If convicted Mr Carpenter could face 21 years in prison, while Mr Dojack could be jailed for 14 years.

Prosecutor1 T Shawn Hervey said: "It is extremely troubling that the persons sworn to uphold the law and protect the public are now charged with violating those oaths(誓言,誓约)."

He also expressed concern that society had become "so celebrity crazed that a market exists and tens of thousands of dollars are exchanged for pictures and stories of celebrity(名人,名声) scandal".

A publicist for Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick said the couple had "complete faith in the legal system".

The surrogate mother, who gave birth to twin girls in June, was not home at the time of the alleged burglary in May.
