| Chinanews, Kunming, Jan. 9 – Yunnan has set up a research team to keep track of Asian elephants in the Wild Elephant Valley, located in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous1 Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
It is estimated that there are at least 250 Asian elephants in Xishuangbanna, one of the most important habitats of these wild elephants. According to local officials, a temporary monitoring team has been set up in June 2006, keep tabs on elephants' daily living habits.
Local officials said that the team has done a good job in the last six months. It has recorded more than 50 elephants' activities and several tracing logs have been released through local research papers. These scientific materials have been transferred to Beijing Normal University’s Life Science Research Institute for further studies.
