Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 7 – Nowadays, flowers and green plants have become an essential part of people's life in Beijing. A research team in Beijing issued a survey report about the flower market in Beijing last Sunday. The report shows that Beijing has become an important market for flower distribution, flower sales, and an information exchange and research base for flowers. In 2006, about 5.19 billion yuan were spent on flowers in Beijing, 36% more than in 2004, of which 1.36 billion yuan were spent by Beijing residents in buying flowers. Rose, lily, carnation1, and tulip are among the favorites with local residents, the Beijing Evening News reported.

Mr. Wang and his girl friend recently visited the Dasenlin (Big Forest) Flower Market in Beijing. They bought a bunch of flowers, which were made up mostly of carnations2 and lilies, as a birthday gift for Mr. Wang’s mother.

“Today my mother turns 60 years old. We have bought her favorite flowers and some green plants to celebrate her birthday,” Mr. Wang said.

Nowadays, more and more Beijingers like to buy flowers to decorate their houses. The survey shows that in 2004, about 3.81 billion yuan were spent in the flower market in Beijing, of which 1.12 billion yuan were spent by Beijing residents in buying flowers. In 2006, Beijing residents’ expenditure3 on flowers rose to 1.36 billion yuan. In Beijing, about 500 million fresh flowers are sold in the market, with their sales volume reaching 295 million yuan.

Today, flowers are presented on many occasions. Men send flowers to their girl friends on dates. People give flowers when they pay a visit to patients. Flowers are also presented at birthday parties. Sometimes, people just buy flowers to decorate their houses… While flower sales on festive4 occasions account for one-fourth of the total sales in a year, people’s buying habits for flowers gradually change – today, many people buy flowers on ordinary days, also.

Among 2,000 people that respond to the investigation5 by questionnaire, 86.13% have plans to buy flowers and 66% have been visitors to flower exhibitions. The survey also shows that on average, every household in Beijing spend 310 yuan every year on buying flowers or green plants. On average, Beijing people buy 15 fresh flowers and 5.5 pot flower (with 1.5 of them being pot plants) every year.
