| BEIJING, Aug. 23 - Chinese share prices opened higher on Thursday, with the key Shanghai Composite Index breaking the 5,000-point mark for the first time.
The Index, which covers A and B shares traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, opened at 5002.84 points, up 22.76 points or 0.46 percent, from the previous close.
Chinese shares maintained an upward trend though the central bank raised the interest rates on Wednesday for the fourth time this year, said analysts1.
The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which is scheduled to release its half-year report on Thursday afternoon, rose about 0.43 percent by 11:10.
The country's biggest lender was a major driving force for the rising index, said analysts.
The component2 index of the smaller Shenzhen bourse was up 0.63 percent to open at 17,441.64 points.
