The original comedy has remained close to the hearts of those who grew up watching its bumbling, well-meaning, World War II characters.

 

And for the new movie's director Oliver Parker, taking on such an iconic television series - which ran for nine years from the late '60s to the late '70s - was daunting².

 

"You know you're dealing³ with a lot of people's expectations, at the same time, the more you get involved with it and responding to Hamish's (McColl's) script, which was a terrific and very fresh take on the whole thing, means you define your own intentions and then you've got to follow them through and along the way, unfortunately, you're bound to step on the odd mine or two. But, what can you do? It's done with a great kind of respect for the original."

 

"Dad's Army" is about members of the Home Guard - the older generation or those who were unable to go to war on medical grounds, who helped keep Britain safe on home soil.
