New rules have been announced for the express delivery sector1, demanding companies use eco-friendly, biodegradable and reusable packaging materials.
快递行业有新规出台,要求各家公司使用环保、可降解和可重复利用的包装材料。
Regulations also include language to improve the protection of consumers and tackle emerging problems, including information security and packaging waste.
The new law stipulates2 that any enterprises or individuals engaging in express delivery services will face a maximum 100 thousand yuan (nearly 16 thousand USD) penalty if caught illegally selling or disclosing users' personal data.
The new mandate3 also calls on express delivery services to launch cross-border operations and increase their presence in overseas markets.
"It will help China build an express delivery network connected with the world and support a global logistics system," said Wei Jigang, researcher with the Development Research Center of the State Council.
With average annual growth of 42 percent over the past decade, China's express delivery sector has topped the world for four straight years in terms of volume. Over half of global deliveries were made by Chinese companies.
The sector saw 495 billion yuan (nearly 80 billion U.S. dollars) worth of revenue in 2017.
