An AI-driven system that can automatically detect traffic accidents has made its debut1 in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, reports zjol.com.cn.
浙江在线报道,一个由人工智能驱动的可以自动监测交通事故的系统在杭州上线。
The system, called "Tianyao," is connected to 249 cameras on more than 700 sections of road in the city, keeping a 24-hour watch for traffic accidents. If it spots a traffic accident or road rule violation2, it can notify operators within 20 seconds. Its 95 percent accuracy rate has greatly improved the efficiency of traffic police work.
There are plans to extend the Tianyao system by June this year so that it includes feeds from 1,700 cameras. This will allow it to cover 43 percent of the city's roads, eliminating the need for traffic police to regularly patrol these roads.
The Tianyao program is part of Alibaba's "City Brain" project, an artificial intelligence (AI) system that uses big data to help Hangzhou city managers improve their decision making and automate3 aspects of city management.
Launched in October 2016, the "City Brain" has been reshaping local traffic by offering real-time analysis and advice to smooth traffic flows. A report by China Daily revealed that the "City Brain" has helped cut waiting times by 15 percent in pilot areas, and cut travel time on elevated highways by 4.6 minutes.
The "City Brain" system is expected to help manage other aspects of the city in the future, including its energy and water supplies, reports Xinhua.
