Chinanews, Nanjing, August 30 – This summer, hospitals in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province are full of students, coming to take plastic surgeries, most being high school students and college freshmen1.
Doctors in Nanjing say that these months they have received about 100% more patients than last year, and 70% of them are students. Most of students didn't even know which part of their appearance needed improvement when they came to the hospital, some of them simply bringing a photo of a movie star and asking the doctor to make their nose or eyes look like the star's. Some students even have had several cosmetic2 operations. “Many of my classmates have taken plastic surgeries, and they have got used to the pain ensuing therefrom,” said a girl in Nanjing. Statistics also show that the number of juveniles3 taking plastic surgeries has leapt by 500% since 1997. It is said that a girl of 9 has undergone a cosmetic operation, too. “It is understandable for young people to take to facelifting, for they have to deal with severe competition in the society, ” said a doctor.
