Chinanews, Beijing, September 18 – According to the statistics collected by the National Citizen Identity Information Center, the two most common surnames in Beijing are Wang and Zhang.
There are 11.28 million registered Han people in Beijing who use 2,041 surnames. The number of people sharing the surnames of Wang and Zhang is over 1 million respectively, with both groups of people taking up 19.8% of the total population in Beijing. The other 16 major surnames cover 39.6% of the population.
The top 5 surnames in Beijing are Wang, Zhang, Li, Liu and Zhao. Wang being the most commonly used one, covers 1.16 million people (10.3% of the total population).
Interestingly, Wang is also the most commonly used surname in China, but its national proportion is 3% lower than that in Beijing.
The situation in northern Chinese cities is quite similar, as statistics show that the most common surnames in Tianjin, Hohhot and Shijiazhuang are the same as in Beijing.
