Chinanews, Beijing, September 18 – Many Beijingers complain that there are too many Western-style nightlife venues1 in Beijing, but too few of unique Beijing style. For example, there are a lot of pubs and discotiques, but not many teahouses or Beijing opera houses.
In the past, Beijingers spent their nights in night markets, enjoying all kinds of snacks while listening to comic dialogues or Beijing operas arias2. Other goods sold at the night market were usually of both good quality and reasonable price. The night markets at Donghuamen, Beijing Zoo, Dongdan, Xidan and Shichahai used to be the most famous ones. Actually, there are still many Beijing opera houses and folklore3 show places available in Beijing, but not many of them are open late into the night. With the drawing near of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, shouldn’t Beijing prepare something unique to entertain its guests?
