Chinanews, Shanghai, Sept 18 – In Shanghai, middle school students quarrel more often with their mothers than with their fathers, according to a report released on Monday by the Shanghai Municipal Women's Federation1, the Laodong Daily reported.
The report shows that 8.8% of the children once had severe quarrel with their mothers because of something related with their academic performance, that 3.8% of the students quarreled with their mothers on privacy matter. Asked to list three major reasons that started the quarrels over the past six months, many parents pick up “academic performance.” The report shows that because of their academic performance, 5.6%—7.8% of students have quarrels with their parents several times in a week and for 6.6%—8.8% of the students, such quarrels are rather severe. Since competition in the job market becomes rather intense these days, most parents are deeply concerned with their children's academic performance. In today's society, a student’s academic performance has become one of the most important criteria2 to judge whether the student is excellent or not. Under this social trend, most parents tend to judge their children with such criterion, too, some experts say. In the report, students list eight things that most often cause quarrels. These include academic performance, household chores, making friends, money matter, daily life, students' appearance, family relations, and privacy. Apart from quarrels related with family relations, all the other quarrels are triggered by the mother side, students say. Of the latter quarrels, 45.2% are triggered by things related with students' appearance and 44.9% started by matters like whom should students make friends with. Experts say the result of the survey only shows that mothers supervise students' daily life activities and their study issues to a greater degree than fathers. Also, mothers have established a deeper mental relationship with their children than fathers. Because of this, it is easier for students to show resistance in front of mothers instead of fathers.
