Chinanews, Guangzhou, October 30 – The building of the major part of the HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be started, and the first-phase geological prospecting1 for the project will be launched.
The major part of the bridge includes a 29-km-long deck over the sea and a 6.75-km-long tunnel. As its name implies, the bridge, when completed, will link Hong Kong SAR, Zhuhai and Macao SAR together. Five artificial islands will also be built. Two of them , 1,000 m long and 100 m wide each, will be placed on the ocean out of the Pearl River Mouth, as transfer stations between the deck and undersea tunnels. The other three will be placed near the coasts off the three cities, serving as inspection2 ports, covering 91.1 hectares, 109.5 hectares and 52.9 hectares, respectively. There will be six vehicle lanes on the major part of the bridge, while the branch bridge linking Macao and Hong Kong will have four vehicle lanes each. Other technical specifications3 of the bridge will be confirmed very soon.
