Tinkers, Paul Harding's debut1 novel for a tiny publishing house, was a surprise winner of the best fiction category. Country musician Hank Williams was posthumously2(在死后地) awarded a special Pulitzer for being "a major musical and cultural force in American life". His "craftsmanship3(技术,技艺) as a songwriter who expressed universal feelings with poignant4(尖锐的,心酸的) simplicity5(朴素,天真) " was also cited by Pulitzer. Other awards in the arts and literature were announced for classical music, biography, history and poetry. The Pulitzer Prizes, which have been handed out since 1917, also recognise excellence6 in journalism7. The awards are due to be handed out at a gala(节日,庆祝) lunch next month. Tom Kitt, composer of Next To Normal, said: "Everybody can relate to what we wrote about."
