A Broadway musical chronicling a woman's struggle with mental illness has won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Next To Normal was praised for "expanding the scope of subject matter（主题，主旨） for musicals".

Tinkers, Paul Harding's debut¹ novel for a tiny publishing house, was a surprise winner of the best fiction category.

Country musician Hank Williams was posthumously²（在死后地） awarded a special Pulitzer for being "a major musical and cultural force in American life".

His "craftsmanship³（技术，技艺） as a songwriter who expressed universal feelings with poignant⁴（尖锐的，心酸的） simplicity⁵（朴素，天真） " was also cited by Pulitzer.

Other awards in the arts and literature were announced for classical music, biography, history and poetry.

The Pulitzer Prizes, which have been handed out since 1917, also recognise excellence⁶ in journalism⁷.

The awards are due to be handed out at a gala（节日，庆祝） lunch next month.

Tom Kitt, composer of Next To Normal, said: "Everybody can relate to what we wrote about."

Lyricist Brian Yorkey added: "This is a show about real people and what they are going through, exploring their pains and also their joys on a level that musicals don't often do."
