Chinanews, Beijing, Mar1. 9 – In response to media reports that Beijing would levy2 the traffic jam tax during the 2008 Olympic Games, vice3 city mayor Zhao Fengtong recently refuted such assertation. He also said that Beijing would not declare a public holiday for all Beijing citizens for the Olympic Games.

He made the remarks on Wednesday at a press conference given by Beijing deputies to the Tenth National People’s Congress.

The Beijing vice mayor is very confident in traffic conditions during the Olympic Games. Although the Beijing municipal government has not publicized a comprehensive scheme for the traffic issue during the Olympic Games, he said that Beijing would not “announce a public holiday for all Beijing citizens for the Olympic Games.” Instead, the Beijing municipal government might take some measures to limit traffic flow at certain places. In that case, he hoped that Beijing citizens could support the government’s decisions.

In monitoring traffic flows, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission has joined hands with Tsinghua University and the Beijing Jiaotong University to work out a digital device that can comprehensively analyse traffic conditions, Zhao said.

“The device can both analyse and predict traffic conditions,” Zhao added.

He gave an example of how such device would work. If there is a traffic congestion4 at a certain place, he said, the device can find out whether the congestion is caused by too many vehicles or some other reasons. Based on its information, the traffic administrative5 body can let the public know about the traffic jam, so that all vehicles running on streets can choose their proper road to avoid the traffic jam and Beijing traffic administrative body can solve the problem timely.

The device is expected to put to use before 2008. By then, all key roads and roads near the Olympic stadiums and gyms will be installed with such devices, Zhao said.
