Chinanews, Beijing, June 29 – By applying a set of high technologies, about 80 kinds of flowers will bloom at the same time in August 2008 when the Olympic Games are held in Beijing, said Lian Guozhao, head of the Urban Greening Department at Beijing Municipal Gardening Bureau.
In August, the weather of Beijing is often humid and hot, which is actually unsuitable for flowers to bloom. However, since Beijing won the bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, local gardening departments had done a lot of research on the issue. By applying a set of high technologies, such as planting seeds in space cabins, hybridizing species, and ion beam technology, experts finally singled out 400 flower species for breeding. With four years’ experiments, experts have selected 80 species that are suitable to grow in the summer weather of Beijing, Lian said. The 80 flower species include the osmanthus originally growing in Yangtze River region, begonia brought from the United States, and sage1, a herbal plant originally growing in Japan. After introducing some flower species from other countries, experts have used some high technological2 skills to either extend or delay their blooming period so that they can all bloom in August, Lian said. “We have selected some trees or flowers that typically grow in Beijing for the upcoming Olympic Games,” Lian added. The 2008 Olympic Games have given as a chance for Beijing Gardening Bureau to improve the living and ecological3 environment for citizens in Beijing, to realize a harmony between human beings and nature, and between individual people and society at large, and to fulfill4 Beijing’s commitment to build a Green Olympics, said Lian.
