China's Ding Junhui competes against compatriot Yu Delu at the Shanghai Masters yesterday. Ding advanced into the second round with a 5-2 win. |
Aug.8 - Ding Junhui began his quest for the 2007 Shanghai Masters with a seemingly easy 5-2 win though the local favorite was given a decent test by compatriot Yu Delu before easing into the second round.
The 20-year-old, ranked ninth in the world, booked a last-16 clash with Michael Holt or Graeme Dott.
Ding, who won last season's opening tournament, the Northern Ireland Trophy1, opened with a break of 97 against the 19-year-old wildcard at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
A run of 76 gave him a 3-1 lead at the interval2, although Yu, who upset world No. 53 Mike Dunn to reach the first round, hit back with a break of 75 to close the gap.
However, Ding did enough to take the next two frames to close out the win, much to the delight of the crowd.
Qualifier Adrian Gunnell continued his impressive early season form with a surprise 5-1 win over fellow Englishman Allister Carter.
Gunnell, ranked 40 to Carter's 14th, had already played three matches to reach the first round, including beating local wildcard Jin Long on Monday.
And he hit the ground running, blowing away Carter with runs of 51, 98, 79 and 67. The 34-year-old closed out victory in just under an hour to set up a last-16 match against either Ken3 Doherty or Dominic Dale.
In another evening clash, Stephen Maguire, who is fifth in provisional rankings, eased past another Chinese wildcard Xiao Guodong 5-1, finishing with breaks of 98 and 123 in the final two frames.
Maguire will face either Neil Robertson of Australia or Matthew Stevens of Wales in the second round.
Earlier in the morning, world champion John Higgins got his season off to a solid start with a 5-2 victory over Jamie Cope.
The Scot admitted to early-season nerves but held on for an impressive win over the promising4 English youngster.
"This was my first ranking match since I won the world title so I felt nervous today," the world No. 1 admitted. "I was feeling the pressure towards the end of the match and I made a few mistakes, trying to get it finished.
"But it's a very good result because Jamie is an excellent up-and-coming player. He got to the final in Beijing last season so the fans know him here and he has a lot of support. The atmosphere in the arena5 was great and the fans were fair to both of us."
The win set up a potential last-16 clash with Mark Selby, the man Higgins beat in an epic6 Crucible7 final in Sheffield in winning his second world title back in April. But Selby will have to first go past local wildcard Yang Qingtian.
"If I play Mark Selby next it will be interesting because I beat him at the Crucible but then he won when we played in Poland recently. But he'll have a difficult game first against the Chinese player as the wildcards are always strong here."
Higgins took a 3-1 lead into the mid-session interval at the Grand Stage arena with a run of 61, and looked well in control when he clinched8 the fifth frame to move to within one of the second round.
The 21-year-old Cope, who reached two ranking tournament finals last season, took the sixth frame with a break of 88 and had a chance to take the score to 4-3 when he battled his way back in the seventh.
But a missed pink on the final red allowed Higgins back in, and the world's top-ranked player made no mistake in clinching9 the yellow, green and brown to close out victory.
Welsh star Ryan Day also moved into the second round with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Malta's Tony Drago, thanks to breaks of 106, 77, 63 and 60.
Veteran Dave Harold won an epic 5-4 clash against English compatriot and world No. 6 Peter Ebdon, while another Englishman Stephen Lee edged past Marco Fu of Hong Kong by winning the final frame.
