Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 9 – The opening ceremony for the 2008 Olympic Games will be divided into four parts and will last for three and half hours. The Olympic torch will be lit at 23:30 that night.
At an interview given to CCTV on Wednesday, Zhang Yimou, director of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies, disclosed1 the information. The four parts of the opening ceremony will be: the opening ceremony itself, the performance, the athletes parade, and torch lighting2. The whole process will last for three hours and half. The performance will last for one hour and the athletes parade will account for two-thirds of the total time length of the ceremony, said Zhang Yimou. The performance will display colorful Chinese culture in its 5,000 years of history, Chinese people’s spirit in modern society, the Olympic spirit, and Chinese people's generosity3, Zhang Yimou said. Right now, the Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee has received a lot of song scripts for the Olympic Games opening ceremony. However, it hasn’t decided4 which song will be chosen yet, said Zhang Heping, a person in charge of the Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. Fireworks will be used in the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony. However, the creative team for the opening ceremony will try to avoid the situation that occurred in the celebration of the British Empire. In that celebration, the Queen of England left the venue5 earlier than was expected, as too much smoke had risen during the celebration, Zhang Yimou added.
