Chinanews, Beijing, Aug. 25 – Recently, three American college students came to visit the Olympic wrestling gymnasium1 at the China University of Agriculture. The three Americans are sophomores2 studying at the School of Journalism3 in the University of Iowa in US. They were among the first group of foreign volunteers after Beijing kicked off the "Good Luck Beijing" campaign.
Their main job will be to make interviews near the Olympic venues4 and write down what athletes have said about the events and provide the source to media groups. “In reporting international news, it is very important to quote interviewees' own words in the news. Our job will be to tell the media what athletes have actually said after the competition. So it is a very important job,” said Michael, one of the volunteers. When asked how they were selected in the US as the Olympic event volunteers, they said they were recommended by their classmates through voting. Makus (sound translation), one of the three volunteers, has been learning5 Chinese for one year now. He can speak a little Chinese. Nelson (sound translation) is a smart editor in his class. He has been writing sports news and reports for his school and local sports media. Michael was an athlete before and he knows a lot about sports. Each of them excels6 in one specific area. So the school chose them to be the volunteers for the Good Luck Beijing. The University of Iowa will send more English-speaking volunteers to work for the Beijing Olympic Games. Michael told this reporter that next year, about 23 students in his college would come to Beijing to serve as Olympic volunteers. He came to Beijing earlier for the "warming-up exercise" in this process. He would tell his classmates what he had seen and done in Beijing this time so that his classmates could make better preparations for the volunteering work next year. Right now, Michael has kept a dairy7 about what he did in Beijing. So far, he has written 15 pages about his experiences and emailed them to his classmates back home.
