Chinanews, Chongqing, Sept 28 – In China, Yao Ming has set a good example for the rich Chinese in charity matter, the Chongqing Evening News reported.
In June 2006, the Chinese Basketball Association published an article in its journal urging Chinese athletes to learn from Yao Ming his professionalism. The article also mentions Yao's enthusiasm for public affairs. It points out that Yao Ming has made great contributions in many public affairs. However, Yao would choose not to disclose1 his name unless the disclosure would further promote public welfare activity. This has become a principle for Yao to follow.
He means what he says. For Yao Ming has become the image ambassador2 for many organizations. He used his influence to promote the Chinese Marrow3 Donor4 Program; he became the image ambassador of the Special Olympics Organizing Committee, the International Association on AIDS Prevention, and the China Wildlife Conservation Association; he urged people to protect sharks. Despite all what he did, he rarely mentioned these deeds on public occasions. But now, his attitude towards charity issue has changed a little bit.
“Traditionally, Chinese people admire those who do good deeds and yet remain silent. But now, I sometimes think that it's better if more people can know what I'm doing now. In this way, they will be encouraged to join me,” he said.
Last year, when attending a public event held by the Chinese Marrow Donor Program, Yao Ming did one thing to promote his image, a thing that he rarely did in the past. That day when the event was held, it happened to be Yao Ming's birthday. While he had never spoken out his birthday wishes before, he did on that particular moment. He said: “My birthday wish this year has something to do with the Chinese Marrow Donor Program: I hope that more and more people can come here and donate their bone marrows5.”
In fact, even before he entered NBA, Yao had already participated in many charity programs. However, it was after he joined NBA that he knew more about the meaning of charity and how to promote charity. The man that helped him a lot in this respect was Dikembe Mutombo. Yao once said that it was Mutombo who helped him learn the meaning of charity course.
“We had been together for two years and during this time, I saw how he (Mutombo) made contributions to charity affairs from very little things. It helped me to understand what charity means to people,” Yao said.
Born in Cango, Mutombo experienced the hardships brought by poverty. So, when he became rich, he deemed6 that it was his responsibility to help the poor. Yao Ming was later influenced by his attitude.
