Chinanews, Beijing, Jan.23 - Around 10,000 table tennis players will get together playing pingpong this summer in Tian'anmen Square, the world's largest public square, to mark the one-year countdown to the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games.
As part of the capital's sports festival, the Beijing municipal sports bureau has decided1 to hold a table tennis tournament at the square this summer, Sun Kanglin, head of the bureau, said when he guested on a radio program on Monday. Sun noted2 that the sixth sports festival will kick off in June 23 with 347 sports events open to every citizen, including the exciting pingpong tournament at Tian'anmen Square. Sun said his bureau is working on the specific agenda for the competition. To qualify to play at Tian'anmen Square, citizens will first have to win in a series of playoffs at the condominiums where they live.
