Sept. 11 - Chen Qimin, team director of the Chinese national tennis squad1, said Saturday the Chinese women players had just come back from the U.S. Open and will train immediately at Beijing for the China Open WTA tournament.
The flamboyant2 women players from China, who continued to make breakthrough this year, concluded their under-expectation U.S. Open tour on September 5 after Zheng Jie/Yan Zi were ousted3 by Kveta Peschke of Czech and Francesca Schiavone of Italy 7-5, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. 22nd-ranked Li Na and 33rd-ranked Zheng Jie, joined by the likes of Yan Zi, Li Ting, and Sun Tiantian, have reached Beijing on Friday or Saturday local time for the annual China Open WTA tourney, which runs from September 16 to 24. "They will have no time to go home as the China Open is following at heel by Guangzhou international women's tennis tourney which kicks off on September 24," Chen told Beijing Youth Daily on Saturday. "The women players are fighting the fatigue4 of the long and winding5 U.S. Open with fitness exercise already initiated6." Yet the Chinese women have already created the best record at U.S. Open, with Li entering the last-16 round, Zheng squeezing through to the second round, and the rest four eliminated in the first round. In the last edition of the China Open, then-rising Chinese tennis women amazed fans with Peng Shuai and Sun Tiantian through to singles last eight and Zheng/Yan almost crowned at doubles event.
