Rome has confirmed it will enter a bid to host the 2024 summer Olympic Games.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi made this announcement on Monday.

"I announce that the government will work side by side with the Italian National Olympic Committee, from now until September 2015, on a bid for the 2024 Olympics. This is a candidacy that fills our hearts with emotion, fills our hearts with pride, fills our hearts with difficulties. We will have the best infrastructure¹ in the world, because that's what 'Made in Italy' means."

Rome faces tough competition from Berlin, Paris, Budapest, and Istanbul, all expected to submit rival bids.

Italy came close to winning a bid to host the 2004 Games but lost to Athens, Greece.
