Real Madrid has fired head coach Carlo Ancelotti just one season after he led the club to their 10th European Cup title.

Ancelotti was signed to a three-year deal with Real that was supposed to run through to next season, but club president Florentino Perez announced Ancelotti's exit in a press conference.

Perez insists that Ancelotti will have a place in Real Madrid's history, but says the team needs a change:

"Carlo Ancelotti has earned in these two years my affection¹ and the affection of the board of directors and supporters. Carlo is already part of our history because we won the 10th Champions League with him as a coach. But as everybody knows, at Real Madrid we demand the best and we think it is time to give a new boost²."

In this past season, Real Madrid was ousted³ out of the Champions League, failed to win La Liga and couldn't advance in the Copa del Rey, which they won in the 2013-2014 season under Ancelotti.

It's rumored⁴ that Napoli coach Rafa Benitez could replace Ancelotti.

Perez said Real's new coach will be announced next week.
