YANGZHOU, China, Sept.20 - Chinese women's team edged out Singapore 3-0 to grab the title which they missed last time at the biennial1 Asian table tennis championships.
Newly-crowned world champion Guo Yue and Singapore's Li Jia Wei, ranked sixth in the world, kicked off the match. Guo used her forehand topspin and lightning backhand flicks2 to take the opening set 11-6. Trailing 4-7, 7-10 in the run, Guo failed to hold her nerves and fell 7-11. Changing ends, the Chinese teenage sensation stroke long and aggressively to rap up points. Being tied from 8-all till 13-all, the match became fairly intense and drew waves of applause and cheers from the spectators. Guo took the third set 15-13 as Li played sluggishly3 to give up two points. A seesaw4 struggle was replayed in the fourth set but this time Guo lost 10-12. Li was not in form in the deciding set. With a 4-11 loss, Li bowed out 3-2. Top ranked Zhang Yining, in her encounter with Sun Bei Bei, played steadily5 plus placement shots and jumped a 2-0 lead in sets. Fighting back with tenacity6, Sun slammed Zhang 11-9 in the third set but succumbed7 quickly in the final set 11-4. Li Xiaoxia, ranked fifth in the world, came from 1-2 down to win 11-9, over Wang Yue Gu in the tense fourth set. Buoyed8 by encouragement from the home audience, the teenage hand shaker wounded up China's victory 3-2 over Singapore with an 11-8 win. "It is the first time for me to represent China to play in a team match. I am a little timid in the beginning because Wang is much more experienced than me," said Li after the match. Li added that she is glad to gain experience and confidence through the tough competition. Chinese head coach Shi Zhihao said both Singapore and China played well and young players such as Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia need to be more experienced in adjusting themselves under pressure so as to dominate a match. At the 17th Asian table tennis championships in Seogwipo, Chinese women's team was downed by South Korea in the semifinal and missed the title for the first time in 13 years. China overwhelmed reigning9 champion Hong Kong of China 3-0 to reach the final while Singapore crushed Japan 3-0 to book the ticket for the final. Hong Kong of China and Japan shared the third place.
