Chinanews, Zhengzhou, October 27 – “Other than a traditional sport, kungfu is a marvelous art, and we should spread it to the world, thus more people will access it and fall in love with it,” said Khorkina, the former Russian gymnastic champion, during her visit with a delegation1 of Russian Olympic champions to the famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province.
“Is there anything in common between kungfu and gymnastics?” “Do we have female monks2 in Shaolin Temple?” The Russian Olympic champions were really curious about Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kungfu. “Kungfu is like no other sport in the world. Though it is not as elegant as gymnastics, it is a good method of cultivating one’s morality,” answered Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the Shaolin Temple. “I am proud to be here today,” commented Khorkina. “The Shaolin Temple has become a symbol of China to Russians.” “Both gymnastics and kungfu require of practitioners3 great flexibility4 and strength of the body, and the movement of both are beautiful. I wish this ancient art could be better preserved and promoted among more people in the world,” said Khorkina. Khorkina will be a TV commentator5 during the 2008 Olympic Games gymnastics competitions.
