Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 29 – A member of the Beijing Municipal committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference recently suggested to have acrobats1 ignite the flames for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The member, Shi Chao, made the suggestion to Beijing city mayor Wang Qishan when the mayor attended a panel meeting of the committee members about the Beijing Olympic Games last Saturday.

In his suggestion, Shi said that nowadays, most people have a wrong idea about the Olympic Games flames ignition ceremony. Many people think that the more sophisticated technologies used in the ceremony, the better.

To Shi, however, it might be a good idea for Beijing to ignite the flames in a very traditional way. By doing so, he said, a group of acrobats could stand one above the other to reach the top and ignite the flames for the Olympic Games.

When discussing about the opening ceremony, Shi, who is also a professor from the International Education Department of the National Academy of Education Administration, said that the opening ceremony might begin with 2,800 children entering into the venue2 by roller skating, or with some people playing Cuju (ancient Chinese football) in the venue to show that football originates from China. In addition, some 2,008 people might form a Chinese go (Weiqi) chessboard and players in the venue can walk inside the chessboard like many chess pieces.

In talking about the Olympic theme song, the professor said that the song should reflect both the Chinese national spirit and Olympic sports spirit. He said that senior musicians might compose and write songs for people to select now. In the end, ten songs might be chosen for people to sing so that the best song can be selected.

The professor also suggested that all transportation signs in Beijing might now be replaced with ones written in both English and Chinese. People who have a private car should now go to work by bike or public transport for at least one day in a month, and by 2008, they should go to work by bike or public transport for at least one day in a week.

The professor showed his greatest concerns about the language services for the Olympic Games. He suggested that college students and volunteers should all take part in the Olympic Games by offering satisfactory language services. At the same time, staff members of Chinese embassies in foreign countries can also make their contributions since they are familiar with foreign customs. For minor-language translation services for which there might not be enough people to fill the needs, China might invite some foreigners working in foreign embassies in China to offer the services.
