Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 4 – According to Xinmin Evening News, when IAAF World Championships in Athletics1 was held in Osaka, Japan last September, people astonishingly found that there were almost no Chinese women runners in the long distance races.
Hu Xinmin, a senior official from Central Administration of Sports, said that currently2 the national training team lacks women participating in the 5,000-m and 10,000-m running. He said it is important for coaches to find more potential talented female athletes. Currently the women world record in the 10,000-m running is still kept by Wang Junxia, a former famous Chinese athlete. Xu Fei, a woman runner from Jiangsu Province, achieved 15 minutes and 2 seconds in the 5,000-m running, which was the best result attained3 by Chinese women’s distance running team in this event of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. But Hu said such result couldn’t be compared with that achieved by international frontrunners. He said that the team was now only led by two women runners, Xin Huina and Sun Yingjie.
